Is betting popular in Ireland?

I've been hearing more and more people around me talk about sports betting lately. At the same time, I'm wondering how widespread betting is and whether the betting culture is growing in Ireland, or has it always been like this?

It definitely feels more pronounced to me lately, especially with the big football events and the ease of access to online resources. But to be fair, Irish culture has been around for a long time, horse racing and have a deep meaning there, every Irish person has bet at least once and I am no exception.
